What Is Purple Banking?

Banking is often the gateway to economic life.

A bank account allows a person to save, receive payments, access credit, pay bills, build records, manage risk and participate in the formal economy. But for many persons with disabilities, banking is still filled with friction.

The branch may be physically inaccessible. Forms may be difficult to understand. Staff may be unsure how to assist. Digital banking may not work well with assistive technology. Documentation may become a barrier. Grievance systems may not be easy to use. Communication may depend on family members when the customer wants independence.

Purple Banking asks a simple question: What would banking look like if persons with disabilities were recognised as full customers?

Not beneficiaries.

Customers.

That shift changes the design of the entire banking journey.

It is not enough to say a bank is inclusive because it has a ramp. Purple Banking looks at entry, navigation, counters, signage, documentation, staff behaviour, digital access, customer support, grievance redressal, financial products, privacy, dignity and trust.

Can a blind customer independently use the app?
Can a deaf customer communicate clearly at a branch?
Can a person with intellectual disability receive support without losing dignity?
Can a wheelchair user enter, wait, transact and exit without dependence?
Can staff understand disability without panic or pity?
Can financial products be designed with better understanding of disability-linked realities?

Purple Banking is not a separate banking system for persons with disabilities. It is better banking.

It is also a market opportunity.

Persons with disabilities and their households save, borrow, insure, invest, transact, build enterprises and make financial decisions. When banking systems are inaccessible, banks lose customers, trust and engagement. When they improve accessibility, they expand participation.

A Purple Branch can become a live model for this shift. It can show how physical access, digital support, staff readiness, documentation, customer journeys and grievance systems can come together.

The goal is not symbolic inclusion.

The goal is independent, dignified financial participation.

Because financial inclusion is incomplete until persons with disabilities can use banking systems with confidence, privacy and control.

Purple Banking is where rights meet transactions.

And where trust becomes economic access.
